  I want to thank you for agreeing to represent your campus on
RILM Database Task Force/Implementation Liaisons group.
By now you should have received a copy of the charge from
Shirley Leung, HOPS chair.  I will be sending you several items
over the next few weeks, including a project plan, user interface
specifications for the Z39.50 versions of the databases, and some
background documentation.

BRIEF PROJECT OVERVIEW:
<br>
  In phase one we have made the database available to the users via
the FirstSearch "native mode" interface.  The task force will create
documentation for this version of the database during this phase.
In phase 2 we will make the database available to the users via the
Z39.50 protocol so that the users may use familiar MELVYL system
commands for searching.

REMAILER:

  I have arranged for a remailer to be set-up for this project.
To send mail to all of the task force members, liaisons, and DLA
staff involved with the project use the address:

  Garrett Bowles of UCSD has agreed to chair the Task Force. I will
be the contact person for DLA. The complete list of campus members
is given below.  Please check your information for accuracy.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT:
<br>
  Most of the work will be done via e-mail using the RILM remailer.
Garrett will be scheduling a conference call for the Task Force members,
and DLA staff in a couple of weeks.  The Task Force liaisons are
welcome to join us on the call if they would like.  We will schedule
a meeting of the Task Force members and DLA staff in Oakland at the
start of Phase 2.  Details of the meeting will be sent later.
