RILM on FirstSearch®: Basic Guide

RILM is an index to about 200,000 citations on international music corresponding to the printed RILM Abstracts of Music Literature. This file is produced by the Repertoire International de Litterature Musicale. Updated quarterly.

The RILM database on the FirstSearchTM system and on the MELVYLŪ system (see reverse) are identical in content, but their searching features differ. Features unique to the RILM version are noted below in bold italics. Use RILM when you want to search using menus to help guide you through your search.

To BEGIN, type use first When the menu appears type the number 1 to choose the TOPIC AREA: Arts & Humanities, then type the number for RILM. Follow the menu instructions to begin your search. Type help or type h and follow the menu instructions for assistance at any point in the search.

The following indexes require the search term to match exactly. Truncation is not allowed. It is best to use the wordlist to identify the exact search term. (w ti=tafelmusik or w sh=russia or w jo=historical)

Truncation (one letter only)
To truncate subjects (su:), and titles (ti:), type the label, then type the search term and the plus sign + to indicate single letter truncation, e.g., ti:sonata+ bassoon+

To look for variations of a search term, look up the word in the wordlist (type w then type your term); choose related terms and search them individually by menu number.

UC call numbers are not available in the RILM database. To find call numbers, logoff the FirstSearch system and use the campus local online catalog or the MELVYL system catalog to display call numbers and locations.
