RE:   Implementation of the RILM Database

Based on recommendations of your HOPS representatives, I am pleased to appoint you as task force members and liaisons for the implementation of the RILM Database.

When DLA mounts a new database on the MELVYL System, HOPS generally appoints a task force and a liaison group to assist with the implementation effort. The Northern and the Southern campus representatives would rotate in serving as task force members or liaisons.

For the implementation of the RILM Database, Southern campus representatives will serve as task force members and Northern campus representatives as liaisons:

Responsibilities for task force members and liaisons are as follows:

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE TASK FORCE

Task Force members will be from the Southern Campuses. The role of the task force will be to provide assistance in determining what kind of training might be appropriate and in understanding any of the issues that bringing these files up may create.

Review plans for the database implementation, including access and online documentation issues.
Review the test versions of the OCLC/RLG systems using their "native mode" interfaces, inform DLA of any access problems that may exist on the campuses and provide suggestions for training and user documentation prior to public implementation. The second phase of the project will be accessing these systems through using Z39.50 and further input on training and access issues will be required.
Keep the Computer Files Committee and campus liaisons informed of progress on the implementation.
Consult with others as needed to obtain specialized expertise.
Prepare brief documentation on searching the database. Make recommendations to HOPS if any more elaborate documentation or training is needed on a University-wide basis.
Develop and implement evaluation procedures.
Inform HOPS when the tasks outline have been completed so that ongoing liaison activities can be assumed by the User Services Group.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE LIAISONS:

Review plans and specifications for the database implementation including access, retrieval, user interface, display, and online documentation issues. Advise the database task force and DLA on changes that need to be made.
Review the prototype database and provide suggestions for modifications to DLA prior to public implementation.
Distribute information about the progress of the project to the campus.
Review training plans and documentation.
