ACTIVITIES
Serials Project.
On August 22, 1994, a final, revised, Memorandum of Agreement,
was forwarded to UC/CDC for signature by the University Librarians.
The following report on implementation of the Serials Project
is submitted by project coordinator Susan Bower, UCSB:
The UC/Stanford Music Librarians Serials Project Sub-Group met 3
times during 1994/95. During these meetings and by e-mail
discussions throughout the year, the group accomplished the following:
- A review of all current music serial subscriptions
maintained by 4 or fewer campuses. This review resulted in
identifying the titles which the group considers vital for at
least one copy to be maintained within the system; and, the
assigning of primary collecting responsibility for each of
those titles to a single campus. The goal of this effort is
to minimize the possibility of everyone in the system
cancelling the same serials title if it is one that is worth
saving for the system as a whole. Acceptance of "primary
collecting responsibility" entails a commitment to maintain a
current subscription for a term of five years, if at all
possible. This allows other campuses to consider these titles
for cancellation with as much assurance as possible that a
copy will still be in the system.
- Agreement was reached that all titles for which primary
responsibility was assigned would be made available by the
responsible campus on inter-library loan.
- Some discussion was initiated regarding the possibility
of campuses which cancel a serial title, not only notifying
the group of their plan to cancel, which is a definite
decision, but also considering transferring their back issues
to the campus that accepted primary responsibility for the
title, if that is appropriate. This possibility requires
further discussion.
- The group agreed to consider additional serial titles as
they fall into the category of being held by 4 or fewer
campuses. In order to ensure that the group knows when this
occurs, the Project Coordinator will periodically ask members
of the group for a list of all cancelled serial titles, and
edit the now existing union list accordingly. Group members
will also be expected to inform the group of new serial
subscriptions as they occur.
- The possibility of mounting the list of current music
serial subscriptions on the Web was raised and is being
considered for implementation during 1995/96.
UC/S Music Librarians Web Page.
At the group's behest, Garrett Bowles (UCSD) set up a Web home
page restricted to the members of the consortium:
http://orpheus.ucsd.edu/music/UCs. It currently contains a
directory of the UC/S Music Librarians with links to local
music library, general library, and music department information.
In addition, the minutes of the last two meetings are available.
Music Databases on Melvyl.
Individually and collectively, through communication with
Brian Schottlaender, the group members recommended the
loading of the music databases RILM Abstracts of Music
Literature and/or Music Index on Melvyl.
Respectfully submitted,
Gordon Theil, Chair, UC/SML
