Signs and Posters

Signs and posters are an integral part of the library, and preservation issues need to be pointed out. Signs are placed permanently in the library, so it is important to give some thought to the design. They originated and developed with the need to communicate information. Posters are a more temporary method of communication, and can be used to highlight a preservation concerns, promote an event such as a preservation open house, or feature an exhibit. Both signs and posters need to be effectively designed.

When creating signs and posters remember to:

• Keep words to a minimum; a picture is worth a thousand words.
• Be clear and concise.
• Choose a typeface that is easy to read--a classic serif or sanserif is a safe choice, such as Times or Helvetica.
• Use good design principles (see Design elements and principles).
• Have permanent signs professionally made.

Sign examples:

• Food and drink policy at UC San Diego.

Poster examples:

• Food and books don't mix, and photocopy gently.
• Food and drink in the library.
• Snacks mean attacks.
• Preserve our books.
