Biomedical Library Preservation Fact Sheet

The collections of the library represent one of UCSD's most valuable resources.

Please remember library materials are shared by all library users so:

• Do not highlight, underline, or write in books.

• Never tear out articles from journals, or pages from books.

• Don't use Post-it Notes™--the adhesive (over time) damages paper.

We realize these reminders may sound silly, redundant, and unnecessary, but check out these facts compiled from the Biomedical Library:

• Fact #1 240 articles per year are deliberately torn or cut out of journals.
• Fact #2 Minimum cost is $20 for an average 8 page article.
• Fact #3 $4,800 per year is spent by Biomed alone replacing journal articles.

This amount would fund yearly subscriptions to all of the following:

Annual Review of Genetics
Current Biology
JAMA, Journal of the American Medical Association
JBC, Journal of Biological Chemistry
Lancet
Nature
Nature Medicine
Nature Genetics
New England Journal of Medicine
Science
