WNC is a subscription news database from the U.S. government with
daily full-text translations of print and broadcast media sources
from Latin America and across the globe. This new electronic service is
intended to replace the assorted regional "Daily Reports" of the U.S.
Foreign Broadcast Information Service (FBIS), which are being phased out
during the second half of 1996. A one-day sample of
the WNC output on Latin America attests to its hemispheric scope. For
the time being, local access to the WNC database is
available at the reference desks of the IR/PS and SSH libraries.
The IR/PS Library holds the FBIS Daily Report:Latin America from
April 1974 in microfiche and from November 1989 in paper. FBIS
ceased production of this key Latin American news source on August 1,
1996. Print and electronic indexes to the FBIS dailies are available
in the IR/PS Library.
Your source for the most current news from Latin America and
beyond as reported throughout the day by the comprehensive AFP
Spanish-language wire service.

Provides English-language abstracts of some 94,000 articles selected from
hundreds of publications relating to Latin America, including dozens of
key newspapers and news magazines published within the region. Coverage
dates from 1988 to 1995, with emphasis on economic, political, business,
and social affairs. Most publications covered by INFO-SOUTH are held in the
UCSD Libraries, and items not owned locally are available through regular
interlibrary loan channels.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Due to federal budget cuts, INFO-SOUTH filed its last
database update on December 15, 1995, and was disconnected from the
Internet on September 30, 1996. The UCSD Libraries are making this
temporary local load of INFO-SOUTH available to campus users pending the
revival of official access means.
