INTRODUCTION

This site is designed to serve as a guide to one of the microfilm sets of government patrol reports from the former territories of Papua and New Guinea, now the independent country of Papua New Guinea. Although the earliest materials in this set are dated 1922 and the latest 1955, the bulk of the collection dates from 1933 through 1955. According to the opening frames of the microfilms, the records from the following offices are represented:

1922-23 -- Prime Minister's Department
1923-28 -- Department of Home and Territories, Central Office
1928-41 -- Territories Branch, Prime Minister's Department
1951-55 -- Department of Territories (I), Central Office

The microfilms reproduce 199 patrol reports, with a few duplicate copies also filmed, for a total of 218 entries. This site lists each report filmed, arranged by modern-day provinces. Citations to patrols which covered more than one province are repeated under each province.

Entries include geographic names for areas patrolled, although these are necessarily incomplete, listing only a fraction of the geographic terms appearing in the reports. We recommend that researchers desiring to find all the references to a certain locale (village, etc.) search the actual reports for patrols in the general area of the locale of interest.

Several of the reports in this set include vocabularies of indigenous languages. To locate these items, please search on the the word "language" with your browser's (Netscape, etc.) find feature.

This set of 7 reels of microfilm, CRS A7034, was filmed in Canberra, Australia in 1987 by the Australian Archives, where the original reports are held. The Melanesian Studies Resource Center at the University of California, San Diego, obtained these microfilm reports under a special agreement with the Australian Archives and the National Archives of Papua New Guinea. The reports are open to use in the library by qualified researchers, with the restrictions outlined below (see Conditions of Use at UCSD).

CONDITIONS OF USE AT UCSD

The following conditions apply to use of the patrol reports in this microfilm set (G91):

Users are to be registered and the National Archives of Papua New Guinea is to be advised of name, address and purpose of research in each case. All users must sign the appropriate UCSD registration form agreeing to abide by the conditions laid down.
A copy of any published or unpublished paper, report, article, monograph, etc., for which this source has been used must be deposited in the National Library, Papua New Guinea. While UCSD Library will inform all users of this regulation, deposit is the responsibility of the researcher.
Given the potential sensitive nature of some of the material contained in patrol reports, the onus is on the researcher to use the utmost discretion and ethical judgement in utilizing this documentation.
Due acknowledgement must be given to the National Archives and Public Records Services of Papua New Guinea in any publications using the micofilm.
Any researcher who does not comply with regulations regarding deposit, acknowledgement, etc. will be restricted access to these documents.
