Statewide Grant Proposals Approved

R&PD-SD, in cooperation with R&PD committees university-wide, reviewed six statewide LAUC/UCOP proposals. Penny was the UCSD representative on the statewide committee, and she traveled to UCOP in Oakland on February 27th to meet to review all six proposals with all the UC representatives.   Five of the six were accepted for funding, after revisions from all five were completed in April:

1.       Jaeyong Chang.  “The Korean Diaspora: An Annotated Bibliography and Its Database.”  Campus:  Berkeley

2.       Lincoln Cushing.  “Database of American Labor Graphics.”  Campus:  Berkeley

3.       Sheila O’Hare.  “Legal Executions in California, 1851-2003.”  Campus:  Santa Cruz

4.       David Owen.  “Consumer/Patient Information Resources for Phytotherapeutics.”  Campus:  San Francisco

5.       Elizabeth Stephenson and Cheryl Bartel.  “Using Personal Digital Assistant Technology for Statistical Research in Health Sciences.”  Campus:  Los Angeles

More information on these five proposals is available at http://www.ucop.edu/lauc/rpd/index.html .

Poster Presentations Funded

A request for research funds was received and approved for the following poster presentation:

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT:

Original Programs Developed by R&PD-SD

·                     Forum on Research Methods, February 5, 2004, 11:30 am – 1:30 pm, Seuss Room

R&PD members developed a special program and invited four UCSD faculty members (chemist, historian, pharmacologist, and linguist) to discuss via a panel format their research methods and their use of the UCSD libraries.  The program, with lunch furnished, was attended by 28 LAUC-SD members and was very well received.

·                     Privacy, Intellectual Freedom and the Patriot Act – What does it all mean? May 19, 2004, 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm, Weaver Center, Institute of The Americas

R&PD members developed this unique program in response to a special charge that was sent to the committee by LAUC-SD President Sam Dunlap in November 2003.  The charge requested an emphasis on programs to address intellectual freedom and privacy.  Rob Melton had an idea to create a program on privacy and the Patriot Act, using speakers from the national, state, and local levels.  Rob identified and invited the following speakers:

1.        Judith F. Krug, Director of the American Library Association’s Office for Intellectual Freedom

2.        Karen G. Schneider, Chair of the California Library Association’s Intellectual Freedom Committee

3.        Candace M. Carroll, Attorney in private practice in San Diego and ACLU Board member

Invitations for this program were sent to all local librarian distribution groups, as well as to the statewide LAUC membership and the entire UCSD Libraries staff.  The attendance was 75.  Everyone agreed that the speakers were excellent, and all came away from the program feeling well informed.  The program was taped in digital format, and the tape will be posted on the R&PD-SD website.

Digital Dialogues

R&PD-SD continued the partnership begun in 1999-2000 with DLPWG by co-sponsoring the Digital Dialogues program, an informal forum for conversations among local and national digital library planners and developers.

2003-2004 Co-Sponsored Digital Dialogues:

1. “The TEACH Act and Distance Learning: Doing the Digital,” Webcast from ARL and EDUCAUSE on October 30, 2003.  Attendance was 18 LAUC-SD members.

2. “Institutional Repositories: Revealing Our Strategies,” Webcast from SPARC and CARL on June 10, 2004. Attendance was 18 LAUC-SD members.

3. “No Longer Under Our Control: The Nature and Role of Standards in the 21st Century Library,” by William Moen, Library of Congress Luminary Lecture Series, June 17, 2004.  Attendance was 20 LAUC-SD members.

4.  “Public Access to Digital Materials,” by Brewster Kahle, Library of Congress Luminary Lecture Series, July 15, 2004.  Attendance was 19 LAUC-SD members.

Programs Funded by R&PD-SD

1.  “The Information Literacy Initiative @ UCLA,” by Eleanor Mitchell, head of the undergraduate library and program director of the information literacy initiative at UCLA, September 9, 2003.  Sponsored by IOC with funding by R&PD.

2.  Reading Between the Lines: Focusing on Health Information Literacy,” MLA Teleconference, September 10, 2003.  Funded by R&PD.  The resulting videotape and Participant’s Manual have been submitted for cataloguing and addition to the UCSD Libraries collection.

PROGRAMS UNDER DEVELOPMENT:

Research Methods Seminar

Penny continued to investigate possible courses on research methods that might be presented for at UCSD to encourage more research proposals from our members.  After contacting MLA, SLA, and the UCLS Department of Information Studies, no appropriate classes or instructors could be identified.  Therefore, the research methods seminar idea was dropped.

Information Literacy

R&PD-SD provided an additional $1000 in funds for IOC to deliver programs on information literacy for 2003/2004.

Net Generation Program

R&PD has funded $200 towards a program to be developed by Marlo Thomas and Katy Farrell  for 2004/2005.  The program will explore how the Net Generation of college students seek and process information.

ADDITIONAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

Individual Professional Development Funds

R&PD again funded an additional $100 per LAUC member for professional development.  A second $100 was also approved per LAUC member to encourage each member to join additional professional associations or to attend professional meetings.

LAUC-SD Membership Meeting Discussion

Penny presented the highlights of the R&PD Annual Report 2002/2003 at the LAUC-SD membership meeting on January 20th and answered questions from the membership.
