RESEARCH:

Local Grant Proposals Funded

·         Nancy Stimson received a grant from LAUC R&PD for her research project on John H. Hickcox (1832-1897) publisher of "United States Government Publications: A Monthly Catalogue," a nineteenth century index of United States government publications. Funding covered travel to Duke University Special Collections in June 2003 to look for primary documents related to Hickcox, including an unprocessed collection of the papers of W.H. Lowdermilk. Lowdermilk published Hickcox's catalog for a while, was a fellow Washington DC bookseller, and may have even been a friend of Hickcox. It was proposed that this collection might contain materials that would further elucidate Hickcox's activities and contributions.

·         Jim Cheng received a grant from LAUC R&PD for his research project entitled, "An annotated bibliography of Chinese film study." As no such bibliography exists, Jim began this work in 1999 to fill a need for reference tools in this area of study. Funding covered travel to the Shanghai Library in China where Jim studied their monograph collection on Chinese film to ensure that materials not covered in online catalogs are included in the bibliography. This grant also covered salary for a research assistant to help compile and organize the three indexes designed for the project.

Statewide Grant Proposals Approved

LAUC R&PD, in cooperation with R&PD committees university-wide, reviewed three statewide LAUC/UCOP proposals:

      1.  " Bibliographic access to periodical publications of Middle Eastern groups in Western Europe," submitted by David G. Hirsch of the Charles E. Young Research  Library at UCLA.   This proposal is related to a previously funded LAUC grant.

      2.  "The satirical face of the pre-genocide Armenian press in Constantinople," submitted by A. Gia Aivazian of the Charles E. Young Research Library at UCLA.  This proposal is related to a previously funded LAUC grant.

      3.  "Roscoe Pound and the women of Berkeley: Class and gender in American legal        education," submitted by William Benemann of the Boalt Law Library at UCB.

After reviewing the proposals, representatives from each R&PD committee met by conference call, approved funding for the first two proposals and requested revision of the third. After revision, funding was also approved for the "Roscoe Pound" proposal.  The full text of the three proposals will be available at http://www.ucop.edu/lauc/rpd/index.html .

Poster Presentations Funded

Requests for research funds were received and approved for the following four poster presentations:

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT:

Breakfast of Champions Series

R&PD organized four ‘Breakfast of Champions’ sessions during the year to encourage LAUC members to think about and to submit research proposals for funding.  Karrie came up with the original idea for this series, and Penny arranged the speakers and publicized the sessions.  The four sessions and topics included:

1.        February 9, 2003  Grants – 16 attendees

PROGRAMS UNDER DEVELOPMENT:

Research Methods Seminar

Penny investigated possible courses on research methods that might be presented for at UCSD  to encourage more research proposals from our members.  MLA has a possible instructor available, Zoe Stavri, who teaches four courses on research processes.  SLA was contacted but did not have a relevant course or instructor available.  There may also be possible instructors on the faculty of the UCLA Department of Information Studies.  The committee will work to arrange such a course for the membership in the next year.

Safeguarding Our Patrons' Privacy

LAUC R&PD received a program request to link to the satellite teleconference "Safeguarding our patrons' privacy: What every librarian needs to know about the USA Patriot Act and related anti-terrorism measures," broadcast on December 11, 2002. After serious consideration, the committee rejected the idea that R&PD should sponsor this program as it did not fall into the category of professional development. In lieu of this support, R&PD purchased a videotape of the program and plans a meeting in August 2003 for interested LAUC members to view the program.

Information Literacy

LAUC R&PD provided funds for IOC to deliver programs on information literacy. The first program will take place on September 9, 2003 from 1-3 PM. Eleanor Mitchell, head of the undergraduate library and program director of the information literacy initiative at UCLA, has agreed to deliver a presentation for UCSD libraries.  The program will be about two hours, including a 45 minute talk followed by an interactive session with participants.

ADDITIONAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

Records Management

LAUC R&PD reviewed the records of previous committees over the last five years. Information gleaned from this process provided new committee members a better understanding of the budget and guidelines for the appropriate use of research and professional development funds.

LAUC Journal Subscriptions

The committee reviewed the LAUC journal subscriptions and made a proposal to the membership to cancel two of three subscriptions to "The Journal of Academic Librarianship," which is now available online. After substantial discussion and debate, the members voted to cancel the two subscriptions. R&PD later learned that the LAUC subscriptions were bundled in a contract with Elsevier with regular UCSD subscriptions, complicating the financial picture and changing considerably the savings we could expect if the subscriptions were cancelled immediately. LAUC R&PD will ask to be removed from this contract effective 2004.

Individual Professional Development Funds

LAUC R&PD brought the issue of how professional development funds may be spent, to the administration. Specifically, we asked if these funds could be used to pay for professional association memberships. The Libraries approved using professional development funds to pay for professional society memberships. This does not increase the amount of money available to each individual for professional development, but it does expand the choices on how to spend these funds.

LAUC Equipment

LAUC R&PD purchased a new Dell Latitude D600 laptop computer with a 1.6 Ghz processor, 60 Gb hard drive and wireless Internet access. The committee also purchased a portable (2 pounds) Plus V-1100 data projector with 1000 ANSI lumens and High-definition television compatibility. Equipment is available to all LAUC members by request; members can also make reservations in GroupWise.

LAUC-SD Membership Meeting Discussion

Karrie Peterson brought the following R&PD items to the LAUC-SD membership meeting of November 19, 2002:

  1. As a general direction, shall LAUC R&PD pursue a research promotion campaign to help LAUC-SD members get more active in doing research?
  2. Shall LAUC R&PD pursue setting up a one-day (or half day) Research Methods Seminar here on campus?
  3. If Breakfast of Champions is implemented, raise your hand if you think you will attend at least one session.
  4. Shall LAUC R&PD cancel 2 subscriptions for JAL, thus adding approximately $440 to the budget for future programming?
  5. Shall LUC R&PD use an informal email poll to ascertain membership interest for programs?

The membership responded favorably to bringing a research methods seminar to campus, to the Breakfast of Champions series, and to canceling the JAL subscriptions.  There was less agreement on the directions that R&PD should take or on the spending of the research monies that are accumulating.
