To Martin Hart-Landsberg,

My take on what the South Koreans think of the North Koreans' soft
landing is summed up in a comment by one well-placed southerner last
summer, variations on which I heard many times, to wit: "If they
starve, dig a huge trench and send up some bulldozers."

Remarks like that persuade me that South Korean and U.S.
interests on this issue are all that convergent (any more). And
come to think of it, why would that surprise us?
