   The 1997 Economic Census, whose data collection phase is
scheduled to get under way later this year, is previewed in
a new Census Bureau publication now available online,
"Preparing for the 1997 Economic Census: Advance Information

Results of the quinquennial census constitute a treasure
trove of economic and business data that serve as benchmarks
for many businesses, large and small. The publication is a
27-page document in pdf format, which anyone interested in
our economy should keep close at hand.

   Economic indicators now available on our web site include:

PROFITS FOR THE THIRD QUARTER 1996 - Up-to-date aggregate
statistics on the financial position of U.S. corporations;

balance sheets, and related financial and operating ratios
for the domestic operations of corporations in the mining
and trade areas with assets over $50 million; data

inventories; data for manufacturers current production levels
and future production commitments. Data items include value
