description

Index:

description: Giovanni de’ Medici is pictured being received by Francis I of France, sitting in a tent. The numeral 6 indicates that it is the sixth of the series. See the remarks for “A Military Defeat” (.285).

description: This sheet belongs to a series of twenty-two* prints illustrating the history of Giovanni de’ Medici (1498-1526), called “delle Bande Nere.” He was the scion of the younger branch of the family, and distinguished himself as the most valiant commander of the papal forces. His son Cosimo (1519-1574) became the first grand duke of Tuscany.

description: Bartsch attributes only five sheets of the series to Goltzius, and Hirschmann agrees. All are based on drawings of Stradanus (Jan van Straeten) and share style and technique.** .289 has the address Johannes Stradanus inuent. Heinrich Golss fecit / Philippus Galle excude. The early version of Goltzius's name speaks for a date prior to 1580. The address on the first sheet reads Johannes Stradanus inuentor / Philippus Galle sculpsit et excudit. Goltzius’s name does not appear on it. However, in .288 the original sculp. and exc. after Galle’s name was changed to merely excud. in the second state. According to Hirschmann’s plausible suggestion, Galle had begun to engrave the series, but then turned the task over to Goltzius for completion.***

description: Galle published the entire series in 1583.

description: * Hirschmann says eight; Hollstein twenty-two.

description: ** One drawing remains in Vienna; five others are in Amsterdam.

description: *** Hirschmann 1919, pp. 30-31.
