UC/Stanford Women's Studies/U.S. History Consortia
Annual Report 1994/1995
I. Summary of Accomplishments:
A. Women's/Gender/Feminist Studies Journals Project: Completed and
continues to be updated.
B. U.S. History Journals Project: Titles held by four or fewer
campuses were identified and assigned to one campus to retain for at
least five years. A second list of titles held by five or more campuses
serves as a Consortia-wide context for cancellations. Provision for
retention, access, and delivery were outlined in a Memorandum of
Agreement signed by Library Council in June 1994.
C. Shared Collection Building:
1. Cooperative Acquisitions/Mini-SCAP Proposals: The Consortia
coordinated local funding among the UC and Stanford campuses to recommend
two microfilm products, ACLU Archives and Margaret Sanger Papers.
2. Women's Studies Microforms Union List: A list has been
completed and is being updated for microforms and their guides at UC and
Stanford libraries.
II. Projects in Progress:
A. Feminist Presses: A list of Feminist Presses in the U.S. and
Canada was compiled and catalogs were sent for. These presses were then
divided into Core Feminist publishers, mainstream houses with significant
feminist publications, less central but still important feminist presses,
and women's organizations publishers. It was decided to focus on core
feminist presses and all were contacted as to their output (per year),
size and cost of backlist, any library collecting their entire output,
and any plans for depositing their archives. The focus in the next year
will be on California presses, looking at possible grant opportunities to
allow one or two libraries in the Consortia to commit to collect,
catalog, and make accessible all materials from each press.
B. Electronic Library: As the CDC is focusing on the UC Digital
Library, the Consortia has decided to identify Internet guides and
finding aids, check various resource lists and articles on locating items
on Internet in both Women's Studies and U.S. History. Any homepages
written by any of the Consortia members are also being shared.
C. Guidelines for Collaborative Purchase: Efforts to purchase
materials cooperatively in the UC/Stanford system are initiated by
individual selectors or consortial groups. Often there is inadequate
communication. These guidelines are being drafted to insure that all are
informed of these potential purchases, they are pursued in a cost
effective way and the principle of cooperative collection development is
recognized as an important factor in decisions regarding funding and housing.
D. Women's Studies Primary Collecting Areas: Primary will be
changed to specialized and all the Women's Studies consortia members will
compile a list of specialized collecting areas over which they have
control or can exert influence.
E. Union List of Women's Studies Videos: A preliminary list of
Women's Studies videos held by each campus was gathered. Further
discussion revealed that there are problems in loaning Media to different
campuses. At this time, the list will not be pursued until there is
agreement on loaning of videos.
III. Future Projects and Concerns:
A. U.S. History Microforms Union List.
B. Concern that all Consortia members are being funded to attend
meetings as items that affect all members are addressed on both days.
C. Keep list on new Women's Studies microforms and sets ordered in
future.
D. Further discussion on Mini-SCAP projects, making sure this
happens in December.
The Consortia wishes to thank the CDC Liaison, Judith Paquette and the
acting CDC Liaison, David Farrell for their information, advice, and support.
