Acronyms for Health Sciences Libraries

AMA Physician Select
Search for information on more than 650,000 physicians in the American Medical Association.

American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) Certified Doctor Site
Two choices: verification of a physician's credentials if you know the individual's name; search for specialists by geographic area. Note: the search service covers only those physicians who have agreed to be in the database; it does not search all certified specialists.

American Hospital Directory
Use the "free" search service - displays basic information on hospitals with some financial data provided from HCFA's Public Use data files.

Center for International Health Information
Links to international health statistics, including public health & nutrition indicators and country profiles.

DocFinder
Links to state medical boards, many of which offer verification services for physician licenses. The Medical Board of California offers the California DocFinder through this service.

Expanded Dictionary of Metaphysical Health Care: Alternative Medicine, Paranormal Healing, and Related Methods
A-Z definitions of hundreds of health related therapies, mainly focusing on those with a metaphysical or "unnaturalistic" component. A substantial bibliography leads readers to source material for many therapies listed. Compiled by Jack Raso, MS, RD, and published by the American Council on Science and Health.

Health Services/Technology Assessment Texts(HSTAT)
HSTAT provides access to the full-text of clinical practice guidelines developed under the auspices of the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research (AHCPR). It also contains NIH Consensus Statements, NIH Technology Assessments, and the Guide to Clinical Preventive Services.

ICD-9-CM Codes
Contains a tabular list of diseases as well as an alphabetical index with the corresponding codes.
