    Catalog of the Scientific Community of the 16th and 17th Centuries
    Collection of 631 detailed biographies of scientists of the 16th and 17th centuries. Searchable on 20 different fields, from obvious choices like name to more obscure details like patronage and scientific societies.

    Information from the National Library of Medicine's History of Medicine Division, including information about the HISTLINE database, now searchable for free via the Internet Grateful Med service.

    Searchable directory of members in these societies.

    H-Sci-Med-Tech
    Web site for the e-mail discussion group of the same name. The Web site gives instructions for joining the discussion group, and provides a searchable archive of past discussions. Useful for locating others doing research on particular topics.

    Extensive list of resources on historical and modern Islamic medicine.

  • Specialized Databases

    HISTLINE (via Internet Grateful Med)
    Bibliographic database from the National Library of Medicine covering history of medicine.   Note: at the NLM site, select HISTLINE.

    Historical Images (NLM)
    Includes a searchable databases of around 60,000 online images from the National Library of Medicine. Note: some images are copyrighted.

    History of Science and Technology Database (restricted to UC Internet accounts)
    Covers articles, books, book reviews, conference proceedings and dissertations from 1976 to the present. It is available in on the original command (telnet) mode of the MELVYL System:

    1. Telnet to the MELVYL System. Your "terminal type" is VT100.

    2. Type hsci at the MELVYL System prompt, and use regular MELVYL commands to search. A brief guide is available from UC Berkeley. Note: e-mailing results is not available via this route.

    OR

    2. Type use eureka at the MELVYL System prompt. When connected to Eureka, type choose hst. Follow the on-screen instructions, or print out the brief guide to the Eureka version.

    Index of Medieval Medical Images database (restricted to UC Internet accounts)
    Produced at UCLA, this database helps to locate medieval manuscript images (to the year 1500) with medical components held in North American collections. The database is available on the Eureka system which is searchable via the original command (telnet) mode of the MELVYL System. UCLA maintains a Web site with a helpful guide to this database - print it out to have the search commands handy. To connect:
    1. Telnet to the MELVYL System. Your "terminal type" is VT100.

    2. Type eureka at the MELVYL System prompt.

    3. Type set lim mat vim (Set Limit to Material type "Visual Materials") and then search the database using the commands provided in the guide listed above.


    Library Catalog Searches
    Choosing one of the following links will send you to the UCSD Libraries' ROGER catalog and run a search for books, whole journals, and other items on that subject. You can then use the "Limit" option on the ROGER screen to narrow down the search by date, type of material, library location, etc. These subject headings are presented here as good starting points. Once in ROGER, you may want to try other search strategies to meet your particular needs.
