Many of our databases and electronic journals require that remote access be given
only to UCSD or UC faculty, staff, and students. All remote, off-campus users must be authenticated
so that only currently affiliated people are given access to those resources. (Anyone can use these
resources at computers in the Libraries.)
- UCSD Internet accounts are authenticated by automatic detection of the Internet (IP) address of your computer.
These types of Internet accounts will be recognized:
- on-campus computers in libraries, labs, departments, residence halls
- off-campus users of a dial-up account from the UCSD
Network Operations unit of Academic Computing Services.
Dial-up accounts are available at a variety of rates, and support modem speeds up to 56Kbps.
Proxy Server Instructions
- For UCSD users with outside Internet connections, the Proxy Server is the
solution for you. Network Operations maintains this server which allows
you to use any Internet service provider (including cable modems, DSL, etc.) and still
be authenticated as a UCSD user. The above link points to useful documentation from Network
Operations which explains exactly how to use the Proxy server with whichever Web browser you use.
We recommend printing the page out and having it handy when you configure your
browser.
Please note: this service is provided by ACS/Network Operations, not by the libraries. If
you encounter problems with your UCSD username and password, you need to contact Network Operations. If
you encounter problems with specific journals, databases, or electronic textbooks, please
contact the Libraries.
