Searching the Internet:
The Internet is a great place to search for...
- information about news or new discoveries
- e-mail addresses for people or organizations
- information about companies, colleges, products and services
- government information.
The Internet is not the best place to search for published articles or books
or peer-reviewed medical information.

Web Search Engines
Alta Vista
Google
HotBot
InfoSeek
Lycos
Northern Light
|
Web search engines use automated "spider" programs to
collect information about Internet sites,
and maintain large databases which you can then search. Use these for searching for very
specific things, such as product names, people, organization or company names.
Each search engine uses a different method
of collecting information about Internet sites, and each uses a different schedule for re-indexing
sites, so no two results will be exactly the same. If you have a complex search, be sure to read
the help screens available from each individual site.

Web Directories
Yahoo!
Dmoz Open Directory
|
These services are like Yellow Pages for the Internet. Use these for
browsing to see what's available on a larger topic, such as "cancer" or "botany."
All include a search engine for resources at their site only. |
