Free Alternatives to the UC's MEDLINE via CDL


The first two links on this page are to the free MEDLINE services from the National Library of Medicine, which produces MEDLINE. Other organizations on this page also offer free MEDLINE. Interfaces and search functions vary from one vendor to the next, so choose the one you like best. Be aware that MEDLINE records contain information that is subject to copyright restrictions. PubMed is an easy-to-use Web interface to MEDLINE and four specialized genetics databases, provided by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI). Records from PREMEDLINE are also included in PubMed's MEDLINE database.

Internet Grateful Med is a Web interface to MEDLINE (now with PREMEDLINE included) and other databases from the National Library of Medicine. It is designed to be similar to the popular Grateful Med software that modem users have used for many years. Other databases which can be searched individually include OLDMEDLINE, AIDSLINE, AIDSDRUGS, AIDSTRIALS, TOXLINE, AGELINE, HealthSTAR, BIOETHICSLINE, POPLINE, DIRLINE, HISTLINE, HSRPROJ, and SDILINE.

From Medical Matrix, this shows many free MEDLINE services side-by-side so you can compare features. Medical Matrix requires (free) user registration the first time you use it.

Provides access to 30,000+ citations found in over 100 nursing journals. Uses an intuitive, easy-to-learn search interface. Excellent coverage in the fields of nursing, nurse practitioner, & nurse management. Updated bimonthly, citations contain full bibliographic information, many with abstracts. Offered through Springhouse Reference Library. There is no charge for the service at this time. Users must comply with licensing & use agreement.
